THESIS STATEMENT
My visual campaign titled Share My Story (SMS) campaign aims to diminish sexual assault and rape culture in college environments by creating “storyboards” that will cause a sense of empathetic connection on the viewer allowing them to understand how a victim of sexual assault or rape has been affected mentally, emotionally, and/or psychologically. Every one in six women and every 1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted rape or completed rape. This campaign sets out to empower sexual assault and rape victims by creating anonymous illustrations that will be used to inspire others to be more responsible and safer.

The viewers will be able to bring themselves into the mind of an assault victim, causing them to empathize with the victim, placing each viewer in the emotional state of the victim. The goal of this effect is to implement a mental reaction with the viewers and to encourage a safe place for sharing . Social media plays a pivotal role in the implementation of my campaign. Through this source, the SMS campaign has become more accessible and plans to cause change in society as a whole. This campaign is simple: gender symbols + comic book layout. Viewers are presented with a story through the use of simple symbols, images, and lack of dialogue. The symbols are my own vector creations that I use to replace all visual aspects of the story and are used to conceal the identity of the victim and to not identify other people in the story. It also helps the viewers understand the story better. The comic book layout guarantees a smooth flow of the storyboards without confusing the audience, allowing them to easily read from box to box in the proper order. The gender icons used also protect the anonymity of the victims. I aspired for the SMS campaign to become a tool for those who are victims of sexual assault to receive further comfort and assist in diminishing sexual assault and rape.
